World Space Week is an international celebration centred around how science and technology can better humanity. To coincide with this year’s events, UCL East and the Cultural Engagement Team presented an exhibition of work by artist Dr. Sarah Fortais, Space Tangle.

Consisting of three distinct works – Cosmic Debris, Cosmic Flock, and Lunga 6 – the exhibition explores the often hidden entanglements between people, place, animals, and the materials that shape how we imagine and make future worlds. Cosmic Debris presents 280 cast hands suspended into a meteoric installation, whilst Cosmic Flock repurposes debris from East London into spacesuits for sheep and Lunga 6 presents works created during Fortais’ time as the artist-in-residence on the UK’s first analogue space research mission.

THE CHALLENGE
To bring together these three unique artworks to create a cohesive identity for Space Tangle that will work across digital marketing assets, printed marketing materials and exhibition signage & artefact information.

OUR SOLUTION
We set about researching the artworks themselves and exploring the exhibition’s key themes of environmental responsibility, space research and community participation. We identified the key motifs within the work, including the cast hands, artefacts and repurposed materials to develop a distinctive visual language for the exhibition. We used a pallet of dark inky blue / black and metallics to centre the exhibition in space and create an eye-catching exhibition identity.
